Suzaku Observations of the Circinus Galaxy
نویسنده
چکیده
We report Suzaku observations of the active, Compton-thick Circinus galaxy. Observations were obtained with both the X-ray Imaging spectrometer (XIS) and the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD). Below 10 keV, the nuclear spectrum is dominated by radiation reflected from cold dense gas of high column density, while above 13 keV the radiation is directly transmitted nuclear emission seen through a column density of ≃ 4 × 10 cm . In the 0.2–10 keV band, the XIS spectrum is contaminated at 5% level by the brightest off-nuclear source in Circinus (CG X-1), but drops to 1% in the 5-10 keV and is negligible at higher energies. We find no significant evidence for variability in the hard (> 12 keV) emission. The Circinus is marginally detected with the HXD/GSO in the 50–100 keV band at 2.5σ level. We model the 3-70 keV band XIS+PIN spectra with a four components: the Compton transmitted nuclear emission, the reflected nuclear emission, a soft power law (representing a combination of scattered nuclear emission, extended emission and contamination by sources in the galaxy below a few keV). The hard nuclear power-law is found to have a photon index Γh ≃ 1.6, very similar to the soft power-law. The high energy cut-off is EC ≃ 49 keV. These results agree with those from BeppoSax. An extrapolation of this model up to the GSO band shows good agreement with the GSO spectrum and supports our detection of the Circinus up to ≃ 100 keV. The Suzaku View of the Swift/BAT AGNs (II): Time Variability and Spectra of Five “Hidden” AGNs
The fraction of Compton thick sources is one of the main uncertainties left in understanding the AGN population. The Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) all-sky survey, for the first time gives us an unbiased sample of AGN for all but the most heavily absorbed sourcesNH> 10 25 cm−2). Still, the BAT spectra (14 – 195 keV) are time-averaged over months of observations and therefore hard to compare ...
متن کاملScintillation in the Circinus Galaxy H2O megamasers
We present observations of the 22 GHz water vapor megamasers in the Circinus galaxy made with the Tidbinbilla 70 m telescope. These observations confirm the rapid variability seen earlier by Greenhill et al. (1997). We show that this rapid variability can be explained by interstellar scintillation, based on what is now known of the interstellar scintillation seen in a significant number of flat...
متن کاملOn the Nature of the Bright Short-Period X-ray Source in the Circinus Galaxy Field
The spectrum and light curve of the bright X-ray source CG X-1 in the field of the Circinus galaxy are re-examined. Previous analyses have concluded that the source is an accreting black hole of mass > ∼ 50 M although it was noted that the light curve resembles that of an AM Her system. Here we show that the short period and an assumed main sequence companion constrain the mass of the companion...

The recently identified Circinus Galaxy is the nearest (∼ 4 Mpc) Seyfert 2 galaxy known and we now demonstrate to be one of the best laboratories for studying the effects of nuclear activity3 on the surrounding environment. Here we present new imaging Fabry-Perot observations of Circinus which confirm the existence of an ionization cone in this object but also show for the first time a complex ...
متن کاملA Chandra Observation of the Circinus Galaxy
We report on a recent Chandra ACIS-S observation of the Circinus galaxy. These observations confirm that the nuclear spectrum results from reflection of a hard X-ray continuum by “neutral” matter. The nuclear X-ray emission is extended by ∼ 60 pc in the general direction of the optical “ionization cone”. An image in the Fe Kα line has been made and shows that this emission extends up to 200 pc ...
